Report: Army troops, BIFF clash in North Cotabato - GMA News

Government troops clashed Saturday morning with members of a breakaway group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in North Cotabato, state-run Philippines News Agency reported.

The PNA report said the fighting was between the Army's 40th and 7th Infantry Battalions and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in Aleosan town.

Col. Dickson Hermoso, 6th Infantry Division spokesperson, said government forces fired mortar rounds against the BIFF members.

Hermoso cited initial information showing the clash started around 9:30 a.m.

At the time, he said the Army troopers were on patrol after civilians tipped them off about armed men massing in the area.

There was no immediate report of casualties from both sides, the PNA said.

The BIFF is a breakaway group of the MILF. It is headed by Ameril Umbra Kato, who led attacks in Mindanao in 2008 after the Supreme Court thumbed down a memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain. — LBG, GMA News
