Seven killed in Philippine SW monsoon - Xinhua

MANILA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people died and over 600,000 people were affected by massive flooding in Metro Manila and other parts of the Philippines due to southwest monsoon rain, a senior government official said Tuesday.

Two of those were killed in Pampanga province, and one each from Apayao, Cavite, Rizal, Bataan and Bulacan provinces, said Undersecretary Eduardo del Rosario, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Meanwhile, four were reported missing and 11 others were injured, he said.

About 601,114 individuals in 125,024 families were affected by flooding in northern regions of Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Cordillera Administrative Region and the National Capital Region, he said.

Of the affected families, 9,153 or 40,740 people have been housed in 199 evacuation centers, while 19,140 families with 90, 458 persons opted to stay in their relatives' houses.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III canceled all his engagements on Tuesday as he continued to monitor the situation in the country, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said.

She said that the concerned government agencies have been giving updates to the president.

Over 100 passengers were also stranded in some ports in northern part of the country and over 60 local and international flights were also suspended.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development has prepositioned 120.64 million peso (2.76 million U.S. dollars) worth of emergency relief resources.
